Magelang, February 27 2024 – As an early step in a promising year, PT VKTR Teknologi Mobilitas Tbk (VKTR), the pioneer in Indonesia's commercial electric vehicle industry, reaffirms its commitment to accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles in the country. Through its joint venture subsidiary with Karoseri Tri Sakti — PT VKTR Sakti Industries (VKTS) — the company officially begins construction of Indonesia’s first commercial electric vehicle facility based on a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) system, located in Magelang, Central Java, on February 27, 2024.
This facility is a manifestation of VKTR’s strong dedication to supporting the government in realizing Presidential Regulation No. 55/2019 in conjunction with Presidential Regulation No. 79/2023 on the Acceleration Program for Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) for Road Transportation.
The “Groundbreaking Ceremony of Indonesia’s First Commercial EV Facility” was held at the VKTS facility, supported by national and local authorities, including the Minister of Transportation of the Republic of Indonesia, Budi Karya; Director General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment, and Electronics Industries (ILMATE), Taufik Bawazier (representing the Minister of Industry); Acting Governor of Central Java, Nana Sudjana; Acting Regent of Magelang, Sepyo Achanto; and other regional officials.
“The construction of VKTS is a tangible expression of the Bakrie Group's long-term commitment toward its full decarbonization roadmap by 2042 — the Group’s centennial year. We remain optimistic about the future of sustainability and electrification in Indonesia, and are steadfast in realizing both our internal targets and supporting the Indonesian government’s Net Zero Emissions 2060 goal,” said Anindya N. Bakrie, President Director of Bakrie & Brothers.
“We are proud to contribute to the country and the EV industry in Indonesia through the acceleration of the national electric vehicle program. The VKTS facility is being developed in partnership with two experts in the construction sector — Bakrie Construction an Automotive Engineering Corp (Sinomach Group), both of which have built world-class EV manufacturing facilities to international standards. God willing, VKTS will also become a central hub for EV technology transfer and R&D, in collaboration with local academic institutions. We hope this becomes a strong foundation for a truly independent EV industry in Indonesia,” said Gilarsi W. Setijono, President Director of VKTR.
“Congratulations to VKTR on the construction of Indonesia’s first commercial electric vehicle facility. This initiative will support the development of environmentally friendly vehicles aligned with the Ministry of Transportation’s Roadmap for Battery Electric Vehicles as Government Operational and Public Transport Vehicles,” said Budi Karya, Minister of Transportation of the Republic of Indonesia.
“We congratulate VKTR Sakti on initiating the construction of the country’s first CKDbased commercial EV production facility. This project is expected to align with the National Roadmap for the Battery-Based Electric Vehicle Industry and meet the Minimum Domestic Component Level (TKDN) targets for CKD-based buses and trucks, ” said Taufiek Bawazier, Director General of ILMATE, representing the Minister of Industry.
With the establishment of the VKTS facility, the company aims to contribute to Indonesia's EV industry in the following ways:
- Green Job Creation: Generating at least 100 green jobs by the end of 2024.
- Supporting the TKDN Target: With its CKD-based system, the VKTS facility will meet the minimum 40% TKDN set by the government.
- Technology Transfer & R&D Hub: The VKTS facility will serve as a central hub for EV technology transfer in Indonesia and become the official local assembly site for the world’s leading EV brand, Build Your Dreams (BYD).
VKTS is building strategic synergy by partnering with local company Bakrie Construction and leveraging the advanced technology, expertise, and experience of global engineering leader Automotive Engineering Corp (AE Corp) — a Sinomach Group company, part ofthe Global Fortune 500, with over 60 years of experience in world-renowned facility Development.
VKTS ensures that local academic institutions such as PENS, UNS, and ITB are involved in the technology transfer and R&D processes. VKTS is committed to continuously partnering with local institutions to foster innovation and develop the best technologies to support the Indonesian government in its transition to 100% electrification.
To build the VKTS facility, approximately IDR 300 billion was invested by VKTR and Karoseri Tri Sakti. VKTR invested IDR 200 billion for construction and technology development, while Karoseri Tri Sakti contributed IDR 100 billion in land and existing buildings. Once fully operational, the VKTS facility is expected to have a production capacity of up to 3,000 units of combined buses and trucks annually.
Ultimately, VKTR hopes that by establishing the first CKD-based Commercial EV Facility in Indonesia, the company can become the pioneer of an independent EV industry in the country and support the government’s vision of achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2060.
