ANTARA - PT VKTR Teknologi Mobilitas Tbk (VKTR) has delivered eight electric buses for employee transportation to PT Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper (RAPP) as part of efforts to achieve zero emissions and fulfill the commitment to reducing carbon emissions.
This move marks the first private company in Sumatra to adopt electric buses, while also supporting the Indonesian Government’s program to combat climate change.
“As a pioneer in the commercial electric vehicle category in Indonesia, VKTR is delighted by the trust RAPP has shown by adding our electric bus units,” said VKTR Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Gilarsi W. Setijono in a statement in Jakarta on Thursday.
PT RAPP, an operational unit of APRIL Group and a leading pulp and paper producer, continues to optimize renewable energy use in its operations, including in employee transportation at the Riau Complex in Pangkalan Kerinci, Pelalawan, Riau Province.
From 2021 to 2023, this APRIL Group subsidiary has operated 10 electric buses. At the start of 2024, PT RAPP added eight more electric buses.
Unlike the previous 10 units, the latest eight electric buses are manufactured by BYD in collaboration with PT VKTR Teknologi Mobilitas Tbk (VKTR) as the distributor in Indonesia. This brings the total to 18 electric buses supporting the company’s operations, reaffirming its commitment to sustainable business practices.
VKTR’s electric buses were chosen for RAPP’s additional fleet of eight units, said Gilarsi, due to RAPP’s confidence in VKTR’s quality and portfolio as a pioneer in commercial electric vehicles, including electric buses, in Indonesia.
PT RAPP Chief Operating Officer (COO) Eduward Ginting stated that by using electric buses, RAPP can help slow global warming and eliminate hazardous and toxic waste such as used oil. In addition, electric buses have proven to reduce fuel costs significantly.
He further explained that this effort is part of the APRIL2030 commitment—APRIL Group’s vision to address the challenges of the coming decade—outlined in four pillars: Climate Positive, Thriving Landscape, Inclusive Progress, and Sustainable Growth.
The adoption of electric buses is one of many steps the company is taking to reduce carbon emissions in its operations, as part of the long-term commitment of APRIL2030, launched in 2020.
In addition to switching to electric buses, PT RAPP is also committed to optimizing the use of renewable energy by building solar panels to power its pulp and paper mills. Currently, the development has reached a total of 11 megawatts (MW) out of the 50 MW target for 2030.
