Kontan Industri - PT VKTR Teknologi Mobilitas Tbk (VKTR), a pioneer in EV Heavy Mobility in Indonesia, has once again delivered a breakthrough in Research & Development (R&D) through collaboration with the educational institution Politeknik Elektronika Negeri Surabaya (PENS) by establishing the Transportation Electrification Innovation Research Center, chaired by Prof. Ir. Dadet Pramadihanto, M.Eng, Ph.D.

PENS officially handed over ownership rights for 14 joint patents, demonstrating its dedication to driving innovation in the electric vehicle sector. These patents cover various aspects of electric mobility, ranging from retrofit solutions for motorcycles to the latest intelligent fleet management systems, and are now transferred to VKTR.

In addition, the handover includes two full patents related to retrofit solutions for in-wheel drive motorcycles, one full patent related to an axial flux motor, three full patents related to electric apron bus systems, and eight full patents highlighting advancements in smart fleet management systems for electric transportation.

To further support the growth and adoption of electric mobility across different market segments, VKTR will also transfer detailed technical designs for electric apron buses, as well as retrofit and electric motorcycle designs. This reflects VKTR’s commitment to promoting knowledge and technology sharing between industry and academic institutions.

VKTR CEO Gilarsi W. Setijono stated that these patented R&D results reflect the company’s commitment to accelerating sustainable mobility in Indonesia.

“This collaboration also represents VKTR’s support as an industry pioneer in realizing the Ministry of Education and Culture’s program Kerja Sama Dunia Usaha dan Kreasi Reka (Kedaireka),” he said in a press release received by Kontan on Friday (1/12).

Among the series of patents secured, VKTR and PENS have delivered advanced innovations that will significantly impact the transportation sector. Some of the key innovations include a swing arm and supporting components with high compatibility for two-wheel in-wheel drive conversion, a three-phase axial flux motor with one rotor and two stators, and a smart bus fleet management system. These innovations not only enhance the efficiency and performance of electric vehicles but also contribute to environmental sustainability.

PENS Director Alifridho Barakbah expressed deep appreciation for VKTR’s support for educational institutions like PENS. With strong backing from the company, PENS is delighted to help solve complex and urgent challenges in the electrification industry.

“Collaborations like this are essential to creating a conducive environment that integrates academic knowledge with the practical needs of the industry,” he said.

As part of the handover, VKTR also listed detailed patents covering solutions related to motorcycles, axial flux motors, electric apron buses, and smart fleet management for transportation electrification.

First, Full Patent for Motorcycle Retrofit. This includes revolutionary retrofit solutions for motorcycles, such as a swing arm and supporting components with high compatibility for two-wheel in-wheel drive conversions, as well as swing arm, sprocket mounting, and supporting components for two-wheel middle drive conversions.

Second, Full Patent for Axial Flux Motor. VKTR has achieved a breakthrough in electric motor technology with a three-phase axial flux motor patent. The design features one rotor and two stators with 36 slots and 34 poles, providing significant technological advantages.

Third, Full Patent for Electric Apron Bus. Innovations include object and distance detection methods through vanishing point estimation using Sensor Fusion Camera and Radar. Additional patents cover optimized component placement on the electric bus lower deck and a 12-meter electric bus chassis design with optimized component layout.

Fourth, Full Patent for Smart Fleet Management in Electric Transportation. VKTR strengthens its position in smart fleet management with patents covering multi-feature combinations for driver fatigue detection systems, smart seat availability detection using passenger-seat position mapping on e-buses, predictive maintenance systems based on performance degradation analysis of main components, intelligent bus fleet management systems, smart passenger services for electric buses, and intelligent operational systems for electric bus fleets.

With this move, VKTR reaffirms its commitment to delivering innovative solutions that accelerate sustainable mobility in Indonesia, setting an example for other companies and industries. Partnering with educational institutions has proven to be a key strategy for improving product services and addressing technological challenges in the industry.
